One day I dropped off my Corolla with our mechanic for an oil change. Walked into the shop and saw the rear end of a car across the way and mom's XJS on the lift with no tires/hubs/rear transmission bits.

It was in for brake work.

That scene always plays out when I remember I'll inherit that XJS one day.

It's mid engined, it doesn't seem that the engine can be dropped out of the chassis like other mid/rear engined cars, say Porsche, thus I think this kind of level of dismantling is to be expected even for changing some cam belts, tensioners, filters or any other consumable that might need replacing on that engine. Also engine accessories are basically the same on most cars and as some of them fail on regular cars quite often, why not on this.

Good time to mention how easy it is to work on old American cars... take a first generation corvair for example. You can pull the entire engine, transmission, and rear suspension out from under the back of the car in a rolling sub-assembly with nothing more than a socket set and some jack stands.

Then go get an engineering degree and join us, maybe you can do it better. Unfortunately, maintenance usually takes a back seat to design and packaging. OVERALL, the maintenance cost is kept as low as possible, but you will get some instances of high PITA factor repairs. I remember a Pontiac Transport my mom had. It was a crap ton easier to replace the water pump than it was to do the spark plugs. Go figure.

Similar replacment proceedure for the alternator in a Mini Cooper. Control arm bushings require dropping the subframe to get the bolts out. I took one look at that job and told dear brother to take it elsewhere. I did the alternator. Most of the work is just taking out little plastic clips and not breaking them.

oh god, I totally get what your saying especially the rear bank. I miss the good ol days of being able to crawl into the engine compartment and being able to work on the car actually, or just take nap on the inner fender while your at because you could.

I get that you engineer's do try your best. But sometimes it is just like you guys are messing with us.
Here a another good example. Putting the motor mount in the middle of the Serpentine system on a transverse mounted engine. So to change your belt you have to support the engine and take off the mount just to change it, or be sneaky and undo the side that connects to the car and jack it up just enough to slide it out.

Just for that, your shares for your Autocad are not going to be available today :P

Replacing accessory units on a lot of VAG's will require a similar teardown of the front end, I'm not surprised that rear engined VAG's match that.

Still, I would've thought dropping the engine down was the common way to handle just about any repair in a supercar rather than this.

This is why I'm afraid to go German, I've worked on cars for almost 10 years (mostly with Honda products - mostly at Acura) mostly all Japanese, the few occasions I had to deal with German stuff it didn't matter if it was how they do the wheel fasteners as bolts rather than nuts or when doing what I thought would be a simple passenger door switch/lock replacement on a Jetta or A4, I always sit there and ask myself 'WHY, WHY DID YOU DESIGN IT LIKE THIS, AS IF YOU THOUGHT IT NEVER WOULD NEED REPLACEMENT?!'

BUT the same goes for a few domestic market aircraft when I worked in aviation, particularily in a specific jet aircraft, whose company is more familiar with making single engine piston pounders traditionally...
